Nick Williams has developed his career as a self-taught artist, choosing not to follow a traditional art school path. This independent route has allowed him to create a highly personal style that sits outside conventional boundaries.
His paintings are created in oil and are known for their intense colour and heavily worked surfaces. Williams builds layers of paint, sands them back and reworks them, producing a robust finish that encourages viewers to consider the artwork as an object as well as an image.
Much of his work is concerned with atmosphere and place. He has described his aim as creating “a feeling of place and atmosphere,” and his paintings often contain a sense of mystery, memory and narrative. They can feel both grounded in the visible world and touched by imagination.
One of the milestones in Williams’ career was a solo exhibition at 54 The Gallery in Shepherd Market, Mayfair, in 2023. From his Cornish studio, he continues to develop paintings that attract interest from viewers and collectors across the world.
