The talented Cambridge-based jazz quartet Q3 has released their highly anticipated third album, “Water Speckled Midnight.” This newest release follows their critically acclaimed album from 2019, “The Monkey Puzzle Tree.”

With 10 new compositions by pianist Martin Hallmark, this eclectic mix of jazz incorporates Latin, funk, Arabic, and Mediterranean influences. The level of skill and musicianship displayed by this group is out of this world. Saxophonist Kevin Flanagan consistently delivers masterful solos and showcases his incredible tone. Electric bassist Tiago Coimbra impressively infuses his solos with North African, flamenco, and funk influences. Martin Hallmark’s piano solos are beautifully crafted and contain hints of the renowned Chick Corea’s style.

Drummer Oscar Reynolds anchors the album with his delicate touch, allowing the fluidity of the music to shine through. Formed in 2013, Q3 has released three albums: “Spider Dance” (2014), “The Monkey Puzzle Tree” (2019), and now “Water Speckled Midnight” (2024). Recorded at Alpheton New Maltings studio in Suffolk, which has previously hosted renowned musician Brad Mehldau, this album showcases the band’s growth and development. US saxophonist Kevin Flanagan has been a prominent figure in the UK jazz scene since the 1980s. He has collaborated with members from Pink Floyd, the Sex Pistols, Portishead, and Led Zeppelin, and has performed with acclaimed artists such as Tommy Chase, David Gordon, and his own quartet. Tiago Coimbra, one of the UK’s leading jazz electric bassists, has also impressed audiences by performing with global piano superstar Hiromi and jazz-funk band Resolution 88. Pianist and composer Martin Hallmark, who formed Q3 in 2013, drew inspiration from studying with the legendary Chick Corea in 2012.

This experience led to performing one of his own compositions with Corea himself. Drummer Oscar Reynolds, based in Cambridge and London, is also a versatile musician who aptly showcases his abilities across various genres, including jazz, funk, soul, and blues. “Water Speckled Midnight” has received rave reviews from critics, with All About Jazz praising the musicianship and engaging compositions. The Jazz Mann gave it four stars, noting it as an impressive statement from Q3. German music magazine Jazzismus also gave it four stars, describing it as a sophisticated album with rich character and texture. The new album trailer for “Water Speckled Midnight” has caused a buzz in the jazz community, and fans are eagerly anticipating the complete release. With such astounding talent and the ability to seamlessly blend different influences into their sound, Q3 is undoubtedly a band to watch in the jazz world.
