Oupa Mac’s musical journey began when, at 6 years old, he won his first Eisteddfod with Allegro in Bb. For the many years that followed, Mac performed in bands as a lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist.
However, 2013 brought a harsh shift in his career and personal life, as his wife became ill with a complexity of conditions. This experience prompted Oupa Mac to make ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’ his first official single. The single is a heartfelt tribute to the life shared between Oupa Mac and his wife over the past five decades. Mac speaks on the song, noting “It was written for my wife and refers to her final goodbye, whether by death, going into a care home, or a break-up”. These somber reflections on the fragility of life give ‘When a Goodbye is Forever’ a vulnerability and poignancy that is deepened by Oupa Mac’s exceptional vocal performance. Also included on Mac’s release is the touching single ‘Montana Girls’, which adds an upbeat air to the emotion of the release. Described by Oupa Mac as “a love letter to my two granddaughters and my daughter who live in Montana”, the song shows the values of love and family that the artist treasures.
